On Sunday 7th June, members of the Durham Divas co-ed and all-girl squads took part in the Colour Run at London’s Wembley Park to raise money for The Education Centre for Children with Down syndrome (ECCDS – for whom we have done a lot of charity work in the past).

Two cars left Durham in the early hours of Sunday morning and headed for London. After meeting at a nearby station to get ready, they took the tube to Wembley Park where they found thousands of people dressed in white, ready for the run. After a quick stretch, application of colourful ‘battle-style’ face paint and a few ‘before’ group photos they were ready to go!

They waited with anticipation in the VERY long queue moving towards the starting line. But soon, adorned with their colourful face paint, temporary tattoos and clean white bows, they were released onto the circuit with the words “this is the cleanest you will be today!”… and boy were they right!

During the run they passed through 4 different ‘colour zones’ where volunteers threw powdered paint at them which clung to their – originally white – clothes and accessories. Although the Colour Run is in essence a 5K run, there is also a great emphasis on the ‘fun’ aspect of the run so, taking full advantage of this philosophy, they took regular stops to take photos or do ‘celebratory stunts’ after each colour zone!

After the last colour zone the end was in sight and in a typical team-sport style they had stuck together the whole way round so ran through the finish line as a team and joined the other runners at the finish festival where they received even MORE paint to throw at each other! Unfortunately they were not able to stay at the finish festival for long however, in classic cheerleader fashion, they managed to quickly take some stunting pictures covered in paint and then had to set off for the long journey back to Durham.

Massive thank you to all of the Divas who took part and we’d like to give some huge shout-outs and thanks to:

  • Our drivers Sally, Rozie and Lucy who volunteered to drive Divas to and from London as well as doing the run which made our travel costs a lot cheaper. Particular mention to Sally who drove there and back in one day as well as running the race!

  • Hannah and Bea: two Divas who visited ECCDS a week after the run to volunteer for the morning, taking part in activities such as occupational therapy, signing and singing.

  • www.cheerbow.co.uk for quickly getting us the fabulous (originally white) bows last minute which we wore around the run – they are now very colourful and great reminders of the day!

  • And finally ECCDS (http://www.eccds.org.uk/) for their fantastic ongoing work. We managed to raise £810 for them and are sure this will go towards making the centre even better for the children who attend!
